'Swap' the tension of battery charging
The demand for electric vehicles is increasing rapidly amid rising prices of petrol and diesel.
But apart from the high cost of electric vehicles, their range and charging time is a big problem.
Work is underway on 'battery-swapping' technology so that people can be tension free about charging.
This is the easiest and simplest way to charge the battery.
In this, a battery charged from a charging station can be replaced with a discharged battery of an electric vehicle.
This technology is used more in small vehicles such as two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
These vehicles are fitted with small batteries, weighing 7-15 kg, so they can be easily charged in less space.
Larger electric vehicles typically come with a 'fixed' battery. The vehicle is charged by plugging it into the charging point.
smaller batteries are easier to replace than those used in four wheelers.
However, work is underway to replace the discharged battery with charged battery using battery-swapping technology in four-wheeled vehicles as well.
To understand the usefulness of the battery swapping technique, three things have to be kept in mind.
•First, swapping out the battery is quick, this will save a lot of time.
(It takes 2 to 6 hours to fully charge the electric vehicle at the charging station.)
•Second, battery swapping stations can also be built in less space, so that there will be no hassle of installing them in large numbers.
•Third, the smaller size of the battery in the electric vehicle will also reduce their cost significantly.
According to experts, the battery capacity in electric vehicles may weaken over time. It costs more to replace the battery from the company. In such a situation, this technique can come in handy for the drivers.
This will not only improve the battery capacity, but will also reduce the cost of the vehicle and increase the driving range. Any location can be selected for battery swapping.
For example, any place can be used including restaurants, ATM centers, gyms, supermarket stores and a parking lot. Keep in mind that fast charging in high outside temperatures can cause the e-vehicle battery to wear out quickly, while in a controlled environment, the battery can last for a long time if it is charged slowly.
At present, work is going on to facilitate this technology. Battery swapping stations will soon be available at different locations.
